FMCSA and Clearinghouse: What CDL Drivers Need to Know

The Basics

What is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)? It’s a US government agency regulating commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). The FMCSA created the Clearinghouse, a database storing info about commercial driver’s license (CDL) drug and alcohol test violations. The Clearinghouse is accessible to employers, state driver licensing agencies, and law enforcement personnel to verify driver records.

Is it Required?

Are CDL Drivers required to promptly register with the Clearinghouse? No, they aren’t. However, employers must conduct a thorough pre-employment query of a driver’s Clearinghouse record before hiring. The driver’s approval for the query is necessary. So, though not mandatory, registering with the Clearinghouse is likely if you plan to drive a CMV later.

Enrollment

How do you enroll with the Clearinghouse? Create an account, provide basic details like your name, birthdate, CDL number, and supply a copy of your CDL and a signed consent form. Need more guidance? We’re here to help you through the process.
